The Chillicothe Voice

A Firefighter’s Perspective, Learning From Our Past

Apr 01, 2024 10:34AM ● By CCFPD Firefighter, Tyler Millar

As a dedicated firefighter of the Chillicothe Community Fire Protection District, I have come to appreciate how events that have occurred in the past leave a lasting impact on a city. It’s fascinating how a few words can evoke vivid memories of landmark fires and events years ago. Our department has played a crucial role in responding to and managing such crises. We take pride in our work and service to our community.

Over the years, our city has experienced several significant fires that are still etched in our department’s memories. The Halloween fire of 1890, the Kelly building fire, and the Santa Fe Railroad depot fire are some landmark events that have left a lasting impact on the city. Even lesser-known fires, such as the Gold Star Home factory fire, have contributed to our department’s history as much as the city’s.

The Halloween fire of 1890 was one of the most significant fires in the city’s history. It started on Halloween night in the basement of a building that housed a saloon, a barber shop, and a drug store. The fire spread rapidly, and the entire block was engulfed in flames within hours. The fire claimed the lives of 21 people, including 15 firefighters, and destroyed more than 60 buildings. This tragedy led to significant changes in the city’s fire department, including creating a full-time fire department and purchasing new firefighting equipment.

The Kelly building fire occurred in 1925 and was one of the largest fires the city had ever seen. The fire started in the basement of the Kelly building, home to several businesses, including a drug store, a restaurant, and a shoe store. The fire quickly spread, and the entire building was engulfed within hours. The fire department worked tirelessly to contain the fire, but the building was eventually destroyed. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire.

Even though these fires were tragic, they helped shape our department and our city. We learned from these events and became more robust and better prepared for future crises. We increased our training and equipment and worked closely with other departments to ensure we were always ready to respond to emergencies.

In addition to our experience responding to emergencies, we constantly train and improve our skills. Our department’s rigorous training program covers everything from firefighting techniques to first aid and emergency response protocols. This training ensures that we are always ready to handle any situation that may arise and is a testament to our commitment to excellence.

We also participate in community outreach programs, such as educating the public on fire safety and prevention. Engaging with our community and educating them on protecting themselves and their families from fire hazards is essential. We also participate in charity events and fundraisers to support our community in different ways.

In conclusion, the Chillicothe Community Fire Protection District has emerged stronger, more capable, and more committed to serving our community despite the past tragedies we have faced. As a firefighter in this great department, I am proud of our team and grateful to have them as our first line of defense in times of danger. We will continue to work hard, train rigorously, and serve our community with dedication and professionalism. We are committed to being our best and will always be there when our community needs us most.
