Obituary – Mary Teresa Gusman

Mary Teresa Gusman, age 83, of Chillicothe, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at Carle Health Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Teresa was born on August 13, 1940 in the Mexican Settlement in Chillicothe, IL to Jose Gabriel and Trinidad (Rodriquez) Medina. She married Larry Borton in East Peoria. She later married Andrew A. Gusman on September 27, 1986 in Chillicothe.

Surviving are her husband, Andy; her son, Mark (Amy Boesen) Borton of Elk River, MN; her son-in-law, Severo Garcia of Maple Grove, MN; her stepsons, Joseph (Jennifer) Albright of Germantown Hills, IL, Robert (Cara Encinas) Gusman of Chillicothe, IL and Patrick Gusman of Chillicothe, IL; 12 grandchildren, Kennedy Borton, Landon Borton, Andrew Brinker, Meghan Sneed, Cody Albright, Seth Albright, Chris Everett, Annie Albright, Maddie Albright, Peter Albright, April Gusman, and Nathan Gusman; 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is Debbie Mullen, who was like a daughter to Teresa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Melina Garcia; one sister and eight brothers. 

Teresa, along with her husband Andy, were instrumental in founding the Mexican American Society in Chillicothe. She was very proud of her Mexican heritage and loved her family very much.

In her early career, Teresa drove a school bus for IVC. She then barbered for many years before retiring from Angie’s Barber Shop after 26 years. She was a devout member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Chillicothe. Teresa enjoyed gardening, especially her flower gardens, and crocheting. She loved planning and hosting their famous Summer Parties and listening to live music. Dancing was her other love, and over the years, Teresa and Andy entertained us all with their exceptional dancing skills. 

A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 11am at St. Edward Catholic Church in Chillicothe with visitation held one hour prior. Visitation was also held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe. Fr. Martin Mwongyera officiated. Burial followed at Chillicothe City Cemetery.
