To protect and serve. These words to most of our population, describes action and efforts of law enforcement in communities all across America. When we see a police cruiser we feel safe and relieved. For the last ten years, Police Chief Scott Mettille and his dedicated officers have provided us those securities and much more.
Thank you Chief.
Scott was born and raised in Dubuque Iowa in 1975. In his early life both his parents had a profound influence on him—they instilled in him good values, principles, morals, and compassion for others. Faith and family, then and now, was always his anchor and hard work and responsibility were no strangers to Scott.
Scott earned a football scholarship to Saint Ambrose University where he played linebacker for the Fighting Bee’s, studied law, and met the joy of his life Susan Schmitt, now his wife. She’s a Chillicothe girl, who attended St. Edwards grade and Notre Dame High and is now practicing in the medical field. Hunter, their son, was a very talented student and Grey Ghost athlete and acquired a golf scholarship to St. Ambrose. Hope is a senior at Notre Dame High School and is undecided.
Scott’s first job out of college was a boot camp instructor at Iowa’s 90 day program for troubled teenage offenders where he helped guide young people. He spent his first police start in Windsor Heights, Iowa for a year and a half then Peoria Heights for 10 years and three months. Early on he was motivated toward law enforcement by his cousin in Panama City, Florida. Scott loved to listen to him explain and describe police procedures and his devotion to help the public.
Scott knows what’s important in life and how not to live beyond your means. He and Susan have been married 23 years and three of those were spent in Renchville where Scott says he pushed many logs and trees away from their home due to the river flooding. They moved and built in Rome. Scott is always looking ahead and trying to find new ways to enhance our town with programs like the Camera Reimbursement Program, bike registration, the baseball card of officers for kids, School Resource Officers, 9 Ordinance Zones for Property Maintenance violations, local business checks, and many more. My observations of Scott are that he most definitely has excellent knowledge of the business end of police administration that helps save tax dollars.
Under no circumstances should any citizen in our town feel nervous or embarrassed to call Scott to discuss issues that have been worrisome to them. He has a very engaging personality who is more than happy and willing to help the public. How very fortunate we are to have one of Iowa’s best to settle in Chillicothe. There have been and always will be Hometown Heros in Chillicothe of different walks, occupations, and stature and now Police Chief Scott Michael Mettille joins those ranks.
Thank you Chief.
