After experiencing firsthand the concerning lack of opportunities available to adults with disabilities in the area, Jim and Laura Sniff, founders of Blue Ridge Community Farm, brought a new idea of using a retail platform like Picket Fence to bring employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities. Just over one year after dedicating this enterprise to its critical mission, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has hired many individuals with disabilities, has bought and sold products by vendors with disabilities, and has hosted volunteer groups passionate about what we do. Every time our customers visit, they know and appreciate that they are directly supporting underrepresented and underserved members of their own community. It’s not just about gifts and plants anymore at Picket Fence. We hope to deepen our impact by working closely with other organizations and bring real change in partnership with our customers.
