Lessons to Learn in Our Hometown

Mar 03, 2023 10:05AM ● By Anne Fox
Time flies by so fast. It just seems like yesterday that many were amused with the folklore or superstition around groundhogs, shadows, and winter. For some reason, I pondered on the lessons that this tale may have. Maybe, the message has been misinterpreted. Perhaps, the message is not about the weather, but the state of our society. Hear me out here….for there is a lesson to learn in everything.

Think about why the groundhog may retreat; what can we learn from it? For the groundhog, the small local environment underground provides warmth, support, and resources. The world above is cold and crazy. There are claims that they are an intelligent animal. Hmmm…the world today is a bit cold and crazy. Is this too much of a stretch?

As an educator for over a quarter of a century, I look for lessons to learn as life goes on. I also enjoy seeing the many talents and gifts we all have for this world. Since the pandemic, attentions have turned closer to look at supporting the community we live in. What if our community would “burrow” ourselves into our community to become stronger? We embrace the young, the middle-aged, and those well-refined. We would strengthen each other to brave the topsy-turvy world we live in.

Have you noticed all the resources, warmth, and talent? I have given some shout outs on Facebook to highlight some to get us started. We may not all need the same resources or support so there is a variety out there.

Did you know that we have a Chillicothe graduate who has two published comics on Webtoons.com? Did you know that there are a couple of graduates that are video game streamers on Twitch that are developing a following on their channels? We have a hometown newspaper to learn about the past in Nelly’s corner and current heroes in the community. We have places that provide experiences and safe gatherings for all ages. We have talented photographers that can capture our friendships and family into timeless memories. All of these provide a path for dreams to come true and make Karma happen.

The learning does not stop, so I am going to hunker down and take the lesson learned from that crazy groundhog. I cannot wait to discover the talents, resources, and relationships of our community. I am ready to support others. Are you?
