The Chillicothe Voice

Reading for the Fun of It

Summer Reading is returning to Chillicothe Public Library, this year with the theme “Buzz into a Book!” The reading program encourages reading for fun among all ages—birth through adult—and offers incentives to make reading a habit with just a few minutes a day. What counts? Pretty much anything, including books, magazines, graphic novels/comics, newspapers, audiobooks, reading to others, and being read to by someone.

Most likely, you’re already meeting the reading goal in your daily life, whether you realize it or not. But here are a few ideas to make reading even more fun while racking up those minutes:

  • Read to a pet
  • Attend a library story time
  • Read to a family member—or find a book that the whole family enjoys, and read it together
  • Listen to an audiobook on a road trip or during your commute
  • Read in a fun location, like a pillow fort, tent, tree, or hammock
  • Read an article about a topic that interests you
  • Check out an e-book on your phone, and have it on hand wherever you go
  • Take yourself on a reading date to a favorite coffee shop
  • Read to learn a new skill
  • Read a picture book in a language other than your first language
  • Read your old journal (or someone else’s—with permission!)
  • Read a new recipe, and try it out
  • Read the liner notes from a favorite album
  • Read a graphic novel during your lunch break
  • Ask a question, then read to find the answer

And of course, you can participate in your library’s summer reading program: earning prizes can make reading really fun! Online and in-person registration opens on May 30, with the program itself running from June 11 through July 22. Registration will also be available at the big Summer Celebration in the library parking lot on Wednesday, June 7, from 5pm–7pm. More information is available at www.chillipld.org or 309-274-2719.
