Can There Actually Be “Fun” in Fundraising?

Apr 26, 2023 09:26AM ● By Leann Stickel

In 2009 our family faced a new challenge when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Faced with a disease that threatened to be physically debilitating, I began researching alternative ways to improve my diagnosis. Instead of waiting to see what would happen, I became active in medical research studies and am now passionate about strengthening my body through consistent exercise and physical training.

13 years later, I have participated in multiple triathlons, bike rides, and running events to not only sustain my health but also to raise money and awareness for MS. In my journey to realizing the value of activity and wanting to include my four children, I founded a youth event in 2015.

Tri 2 Beat MS is a kids’ triathlon that we host at Shore Acres Park with the support of the Chillicothe Park District. Our primary goal is to raise money to help individuals with Multiple Sclerosis in Illinois. Our secondary goal is to inspire our youth to love fitness. This year’s event is June 10th and is our 9th annual race. We average 160 kids racing each year which brings over 500 people to our great community and parks. The race is modeled after a “real” triathlon and is professionally timed by Shazam Racing. Finisher medals and trophies are awarded, which seem to be a highlight for the kids! You can register today at www.tri2beatms.com

OK, so I need to get back to how fundraising can be “fun.” The fun part is the fact it’s a race full of kids. I mean how much more fun can you get?  Our target age group is 6 to 15 with no experience necessary. If you have a bike and a helmet you can show up the morning of our event and jump in. Our race is peppered with amazing volunteers that make it safe and smooth for kids of all ages to participate.

  • The fun part is watching kids do a hard thing.
  • The fun part is watching them accomplish something amazing.
  • The fun part is watching parents and grandparents cheer for their littles.
  • The fun part is celebrating and handing out awards.
  • The fun part is watching kids do something new and different.
  • The fun part is 800 high fives.
  • The fun part is watching volunteers love their job.
  • The fun part is handing out donuts to those amazing volunteers.

We split our proceeds between the Illinois Chapter of the MS Society and The Central Illinois MS Council. The state chapter organization funds research, education, and awareness. The local council is an organization that is very hands-on and pays for ramps, wheelchairs, co-pays, and so much more. We see great value in both organizations and are thrilled to support them with donations from our triathlon.

Join us as a participant, volunteer, sponsor, or donor, and be a part of improving the lives of your fellow community members living with Multiple Sclerosis.
