Circle of Service News - July 2023

Peoria native Lore Baxter, recently promoted to Division Chief of Operations – Peoria Fire Department, was the guest speaker at our May meeting. She’s now third in command at the Peoria Fire Department and has gone from a union 24/7/365 every-third-day work schedule to an administrative position, which means she works a Monday through Friday 40-hour week (including additional hours as required) and is on call 24/7 two weeks out of every six.

In the mid-1990s Lore struggled with what she wanted to do with her life; however, she worked out regularly at a gym and was encouraged by male Peoria Fire Department members working out at the gym to test for a position with the Fire Department, which she did in 1997. She was hired 25 years ago in April, 1998, as a Firefighter, gradually working up through the ranks to Engineer, Captain, and Battalion Chief positions, which prepared her for her current position as Division Chief of Operations. According to Lore, one of her most important accomplishments was being certified as a paramedic because she’s always loved helping others. She claims to be an “adrenaline junkie,” which truly suits her career choice. Her current position requires her to oversee daily operations, including 171 personnel (47 are needed on duty every 24/7/365 shift), twelve fire stations, and fire apparatus. There are five women currently employed in the Peoria Fire Department; four are firefighters. Lore serves as an example of what anyone can accomplish when they apply themselves and hopes the number of women in the department increases in the future.

Circle of Service celebrated its 4th birthday at Grecian Gardens on June 20th. Thanks to birthday party co-chairs Kitty Baxter and Marti Boyle for coordinating the event and to the staff at Grecian for their excellent service.
