The idea to have a haunted house in Chillicothe came about in 1999 to be used as a fundraiser for the Park. Three Sisters Park reached out to the Chillicothe Optimist Club for support in making this idea become a reality. The thought was to have three main “haunted” attractions. To name the event, they reached out to the junior and senior IVC high school students and conducted a contest. Thus Spider Hill was born. Its first year of operation was in 1999. The Optimist Club was involved with the initial stages and years of operation, but over the years, Three Sisters Park became the primary entity behind the scenes.
Spider Hill Haunted Attractions began with a skeleton crew working behind the scenes. It has always taken many volunteers to continue to run the attractions! Currently, we have anywhere from 60–100+ volunteers for a single night of operation! A portion of the proceeds is donated back to the community nonprofit organizations that help.
Each of the attractions has seen many changes throughout the years. The haunted house originally began with mobile trailers that were donated to the Park. The first year two trailers were gutted and walls were built on the interior to provide a maze of rooms for customers to walk through. The following year four trailers were used, and eventually, the building known as the “haunted house” was permanently constructed on the Park property. The interior design of this building has changed several times over the years, with numerous changes and additions made annually.
The haunted walking trail through the woods began on a trail through the woods. Volunteers created their own “rooms” or exhibits to create an eerie walk through the dark woods. Over the years several permanent structures and smaller buildings were built to provide a unique experience for all customers as they traveled through uneven ground, and in and out of dark buildings with surprises around every corner.
The third attraction has changed the most over the years. It went from a family-friendly ride to a more in-depth “scary” ride as Spider Hill grew in popularity. Roughly 10 years ago, Spider Hill joined forces with the Chillicothe Paintball Pits to create a Zombie Paintball ride! As Zombie Paintball lost some of its luster in the haunt industry, it was phased out.
This year, Spider Hill will again join forces with an outside group for our third attraction. Enlightened Souls Paranormal will be working with Spider Hill to conduct paranormal investigations in one of the historical buildings on the property! As with the hayrack ride, this will offer a different type of experience than the jump scares and thrills of the house and trail. This will provide a more realistic realm of “scary” as you have the opportunity to investigate paranormal activity with professional investigators and devices. You will even get the chance to do some investigation of your own!
