Obituary - Sarah Mae Williamson

Sarah Mae Williamson, age 70, of Chillicothe, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, surrounded by loved ones, after a heroic battle with ovarian cancer.

Sarah was born on August 9, 1953 in Lima, Ohio to Billy and Iris “Faye” (Walters) Gillen. She married Wesley Williamson on September 15, 1974 in Coldbrook, Illinois.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Wesley; her children, Eric Williamson of Chillicothe, IL, Jennifer (Alex) Block of Chillicothe, IL, Janet (Leroy) Shumaker of O’Fallon, MO and Karen Hewit of Cary, NC; her six grandchildren, Ryan and Ella Block, Tyler Shumaker, Ashton (Jamel) Johnson, and Alex and Parker Hewit; her sister, Garda (Curt) Tatum of Fayetteville, NC; her brother, Casey Gillen of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Shawn Gillen.

Sarah operated World Class Travel for 28 years and Happy Thought Coffee for 25 years. Volunteerism and giving back was a large part of her life, including her annual free Community Thanksgiving and free Santa’s Brunch. She was a significant and contributing member of every community she was a part of, including Chillicothe Circle of Service, 20 years on the IVC School Board, Illinois and National PTA, and the Chillicothe Rotary Club. She was a member of Chillicothe First United Methodist Church. Most important to her was her family and she enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren, who were a daily part of her life until the end.

Cremation rites were accorded and a memorial service was held at 11am on Monday, October 16, 2023 at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home. Rev. Ron Martz officiated. Per Sarah’s wishes, there was no visitation. Memorials in her name may be made to the Chillicothe First United Methodist Church or through blood donations to the Red Cross.
