Stay Safe This Winter Season

Dec 21, 2023 03:46PM ● By CCFPD Firefighter Tyler Millar

Winter can be a beautiful season, but it also comes with challenges, including slippery roads, low visibility, and extreme weather conditions that can lead to accidents and emergencies. As a responsible driver, it is crucial to take necessary precautions and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents during the winter season. Additionally, it is vital to be aware of the potential for winter fires and to take steps to avoid them. In an emergency, all vehicle occupants must know how to call 911 and what actions to take until emergency responders arrive.

Stay safe during winter by keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle with essentials such as warm clothing, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a shovel. Consider carrying sand or kitty litter for traction if your car gets stuck in the snow.

Adjust your driving habits according to the weather conditions. Drive slower and keep safe from other vehicles, especially on slippery roads. Avoid sudden turns or lane changes, and use your turn signals to indicate your intentions to other drivers. Wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers do the same.

Don’t drive while distracted. Avoid using your phone or doing anything else that can take your attention away from the road. If you need to make a call or send a message, pull over to a safe location and do so.

Stay updated on weather conditions and road closures during the winter. Avoid driving in severe weather if possible. If you must, stay alert and cautious, and be ready to alter your plans.

One of the most important things you can do to prevent winter fires is to ensure that your heating system is in good condition and has been inspected by a professional. If you use a space heater, ensure it is at least three feet away from flammable materials, such as curtains, bedding, or furniture. Also, never leave a space heater unattended; always turn it off when not in the room.

Another common cause of winter fires is candles. Although candles can be a cozy addition to your home, they are also a fire hazard. Always keep candles away from flammable materials, such as curtains, bedding, or furniture. Additionally, never leave a candle unattended, and always ensure it is on a stable surface.

To prevent winter fires while cooking, never leave the kitchen unattended. Keep flammable materials away from the stove and use a fire extinguisher or lid to smother flames instead of water.

In addition to these fire safety tips, it is also essential to have working smoke detectors in your home. Smoke detectors should be installed on every level of your home and outside every sleeping area. Test your smoke detectors regularly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

Having a fire escape plan and keeping a phone nearby to call 911 in an emergency is essential. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, avoid distractions, and stay informed about weather and road closures. Maintain heating and electrical appliances, control candles and cooking, have working smoke detectors and a fire escape plan, and be cautious when using space heaters.

Happy New Year, and Stay safe this winter!
