The Chillicothe Voice

An Easter Hero

We love to celebrate and hear stories about real-life heroes—people who give of themselves and risk their lives to save another. We watch videos about them and honor them with awards and accolades. And we should because these heroes should be celebrated. They are remarkable human beings.

Jesus came to earth as our Rescuer. He gave his life for us. He is a hero, but not everyone sees Him that way. He’s not always celebrated and honored, though He should be.

Jesus came to earth to fulfill His Father’s mission. His mission was to save, to rescue the world from the power of darkness on earth and in all eternity in Hell. It says in John 3:17, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

I’m a parent, and God’s plan to give His Son as a sacrifice for sins is unfathomable. What could motivate God to give His Son to save the world?

One powerful word. Love.

It says one verse earlier in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

I think sometimes we look at God and His Son, Jesus, as intimidating or even uncaring when it comes to the world’s problems. The Bible paints a very different picture—it is the story of a hero, a rescuer motivated by love, love for you and me. A love so deep that God would give us His Son because He desires to be in a relationship with us. Now, this is the Good News of the Gospel.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
