The Chillicothe Voice

Letter From the Editor – May 2024

Boys R to L: Charlie Eberle, Hank Tobin, and Milo Eberle.

It’s that time of year to hear stories of people’s mushroom-hunting escapades and their bounties or lack thereof. For most of my life, I have heard people talk about mushroom hunting and then would hear the many ways to prepare them into delectable edibles. I have never had an interest in joining the ranks of a mushroom hunter simply because I didn’t know how. I have a lot to learn about this art—like where to look, how to look, and when is the best time to look. From the looks of this photo that was submitted to me today, it appears these three young hunters have already learned the art of mushroom hunting. What a thrill to have found these GIANT Morel Mushrooms right here in Chillicothe on a warm April day.

Charlie and Milo Eberle attend St. Edward School here in Chillicothe while Hank Tobin attends Concordia Lutheran in Peoria. These boys are best of friends and neighbors in Chillicothe. The location of the morels they are keeping secret like any good mushroom hunter would (no trespassing was involved—they are morel hunters with good morals) but they were found locally not far from home in Chillicothe.
