Free Monthly Concerts Continue With Chillicothe Public Library’s “Live at the Library” Series

You probably won’t get shushed at Chillicothe Public Library. In fact, you might be invited to make some noise—or even get up and dance—with “Live at the Library,” a series of free monthly concerts. Held on Saturday afternoons at 2pm, these concerts feature performances by a wide variety of artists, some local and some hailing from as far afield as Ireland, Malawi, and Sweden. This summer and fall promise an exciting lineup.
On July 20, the library welcomes Canadian ensemble Medusa. Wielding a sound that would turn classical music scholars to stone, these four folk musicians are reimagining the Western string quartet. By inviting back instrumental voices previously regarded as too ugly for “polite society,” Medusa tempts us to redefine what is beautiful. Their dynamic arrangements cross-pollinate the sounds of Middle Eastern, Scandinavian, Celtic, Appalachian, and Eastern European music, as well as original tunes, and connect audiences across dividing lines of culture and identity to reveal common threads.
On August 24, the library partners with Chillicothe Park District to host a concert at Shore Acres Clubhouse (100 Park Boulevard), featuring River Valley Big Band. This Central Illinois group brings traditional big band sound to a variety of music from the 1920s through today. The concert is sponsored by Jon Young Dance, Inc., and an optional free Beginners East Coast Swing dance lesson will be offered ahead of the concert from 1:15–1:45pm. The concert runs from 2pm–4pm (listeners and dancers welcome!), followed by an additional hour of dancing DJ’d by Jon Young, for anyone who would like to stick around.
On September 21, The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc performs at the library during their US tour. This vibrant trio is comprised of master fiddle players from Norway, Sweden, and the Shetland Islands. Their gripping blend of fiddle music highlights the unique traditions of their homelands, while combining them into a new sound with clever use of harmony, rhythm, riffs, and bass lines.
October 19 will see the return of local favorites, The Water Street Stompers. Known for their engaging performances and audience involvement, this high-energy band brings the spirit of Mardi Gras to their audiences with traditional New Orleans Jazz.
All concerts are free and open to the public (donations welcome). Chillicothe Public Library is located at 430 N. Bradley Ave., Chillicothe. More information is available at chillipld.org or by calling 309-274-2719.
