The Chillicothe Voice

How does the Chillicothe Park District have a park in North Peoria? Let us tell you!

In the 1960s, growth was happening in the central Illinois area with the construction of the Caterpillar Engine Plant. Knowing the asset this would be for the region, the Peoria Park District annexed the property. Those owning land in northern Medina Township, which would become North Peoria, were fearful they would be next to be annexed into the Peoria Park District. To prevent this and to help keep their taxes lower, the property owners approached the Chillicothe Park District board and requested for their land to be annexed into the Chillicothe Park District boundaries.

Unbeknownst to park board leaders at the time, this northern Peoria area would be a vital piece of growth and development for the district. Today, because of the growth in the northern Peoria area, the parcels that were annexed in the 1960s now make up an estimated 25% of the property tax dollars brought into the park district each year.

One of the largest residential developments within the Chillicothe Park District boundaries in North Peoria are Stonegate and Wynncrest subdivisions located between Hickory Grove and Alta Road. In the middle of this development is a 15-acre piece of land donated by Signature Homes in 2010. Over the next several years, the Chillicothe Park District formed this piece of land into a unique park asset for all of our residents to enjoy.

The beginnings of a new park began in 2012 with 67 trees being planted. In 2013, the park district added in a 1-mile walking trail around the scenic property, and in 2016, an agreement was made with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to stock and maintain the three retention areas.

In 2017, the newest playground of the Chillicothe Park District was constructed. This nature-themed, innovative playground includes one-of-a-kind climbing features, of which the design is exclusive to the Chillicothe Park District. The park was also one of the first in the country to feature the Game Time Company’s expression swing. It is the only patented playground swing designed for face-to-face interaction on the playground. The expression design allows for personal interaction between a grown-up and a child while swinging. A shallow, slow-running stream bordering the playground allows for kids to be kids and provides an area for “dirty play” and a hands-on nature experience.

As the neighborhood continued to grow and empty lots surrounding the park were developed, a new parking area was constructed along Hickory Grove Road at the North end of the park.

In 2022, with the cooperation of Pearce Community Center, a QR Fit Trail experience was added along the 1-mile walking path allowing users to have the feeling of a personal trainer at the palm of their hand as they enjoyed the scenic views from around the park.

Today, StoneWater Park is one of the most unique, culturally diverse, and serene parks in the Chillicothe Park District repertoire of recreation opportunities. Guests are encouraged to bring their fishing poles, their walking shoes, and their sense of adventure to play and visit StoneWater Park.
