Obituary – Norma A. Smith

Norma, 98, of Normal, formerly of Chillicothe, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at The Village at Mercy Creek. 

Born in Toulon, on February 22, 1926, the daughter of the late Rae and Alta (Murchison) Anderson. On June 16, 1948, she married Charles Allen Smith in Toulon. He preceded her in death on November 6, 2020. 

Surviving are three children, Janet (Frank) Cihla of Westerville, OH, Jeff Smith of Danvers, and Jennifer (Jeff) Williams of Danvers; two grandsons, Jay Cihla and Andrew (Michelle) Cihla; two great-grandchildren, Leo and Sydney Cihla; a brother, Robert (Sue) Anderson of Toulon; and several close nieces. She was also preceded in death by two siblings, Jean (Raymond) Howell and Donald Anderson.

Prior to staying at home to raise her family, Norma worked typing military discharge paperwork, and thesis writing at the University of Illinois, and later in the cafeteria at the Rome School for many years. She enjoyed being in nature and birdwatching, and kept her hands busy with crafts like crocheting and knitting. She would often send letters to her beloved family members and friends.

A private graveside service will take place at West Jersey Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Traditions Hospice or the Stark County Historical Society.
