Why I JOINED? Chillicothe Community Fire Protection District

Sep 30, 2024 10:47AM ● By CCFPD Firefighter Devin Wilson

Greetings! My name is Devin Wilson, and I have been a proud member of Chillicothe's fire department since March of 2024. Joining the department has been one of the best decisions of my entire life, and I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunities and experiences it has provided me.

I grew up in Chillicothe, attending Mossville Junior High and Illinois Valley Central High School. I was deeply involved in music and was part of various musical groups, including a concert band, marching band, choir, and a men's acapella group called "Guys Group." After high school, I enrolled at Illinois Central College to pursue a degree in music education, but I didn't continue with that degree due to unexpected circumstances. I then moved from job to job in search of fulfillment and purpose.

During one of my jobs, a Chilli firefighter suggested I consider joining the fire department. At first, I hesitated, but after observing training sessions, I knew I had found my calling. Fast forward a few life-changing months, and I now have a career I am proud of. I am a full-time firefighter at Caterpillar's Fire Department station 41. I am currently enrolled in the intense Basic Operations Firefighting course. I am constantly learning and improving to serve my community better. The learning process has been challenging and rewarding, and I am excited to continue growing in this field. In January, I will begin another extensive course to obtain my EMT license, further expanding my abilities as an emergency responder. I am committed to continuously improving myself as a provider, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for me in this incredible profession.

One of the most rewarding aspects of joining the fire department has been the sense of family and belonging that comes with it. The people I work with have become more than just colleagues; they are my brothers and sisters. We share a bond built on trust, teamwork, and commitment to serving our community. Knowing that I have found a career where I can make a difference in people's lives while working alongside such dedicated and supportive individuals is something I am genuinely grateful for.

Looking back, I realize that every twist and turn in my journey has led me to where I am today. The experiences I gained in music, the uncertainty I felt after leaving college, and the various jobs I tried all shaped the person I am now. Joining the fire department has given me the sense of purpose and fulfillment I had been searching for, and I am excited to continue this journey. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my community, to learn and grow in this profession, and to be part of such an incredible family. The future is full of possibilities, and I can't wait to see where this path will take me.
