Fun and Games at Chillicothe Public Library

When you think “library,” what comes to mind? Books, probably—but Chillicothe Public Library’s mission to bring people, information, and ideas together goes far beyond the printed page.
During cold weather, many of us connect with each other over a jigsaw puzzle (or twelve). If you’re tired of the puzzles at home and want to put together new-to-you puzzles without breaking the bank, the library’s Puzzle Exchange offers a large selection of donated puzzles, free for the taking. And if you have a puzzle that you’re done with, you can leave it at the library for others to try.
Nothing sends cozy holiday vibes like sitting down as a family to a cutthroat game of Settlers of Catan. But if trading sheep for brick isn’t your thing, you can check out the library’s collection of over 50 board games and strategy games. There’s something for all ages and interests: browse the binder for available games, and come to the front desk to check a couple out.
While you’re at it, why not try an interactive STEM kit? These kits help your family explore science, technology, engineering, and math in fun, hands-on ways. Check out kits on basic coding and robotics, renewable energy, optics, electrical circuits, construction with Legos, puzzle solving (think portable escape room), and more. There’s even a marble run!
Video games can also offer rich storytelling, player interaction, and problem solving. The library currently lends video games for PlayStation (3, 4, and 5), Xbox (One and 360), Wii, WiiU, and Switch. Don’t have a console at home? You can play WiiU games at the library—just check out a game and controllers at the front desk.
If you love puzzles like Sudoku, crosswords, and word games, Hoopla’s Puzzle Palace BingePass lets you take a crack at a variety of brain-bending games, with new ones added regularly. One checkout gives you access to all the puzzles for a week! Need help getting started with Hoopla or any of the library’s other digital platforms? The library staff is happy to assist.
Finally, if you’re looking to get out of the house this winter, consider celebrating National Puzzle Day on January 29 by registering yourself or a team of four for the library’s Jigsaw Puzzle Contest!
