Research from the AARP highlights that seniors who participate in regular social and physical activities are 60% happier than those who are isolated or sedentary. Over the past year, the Chillicothe Park District has wholeheartedly embraced, encouraged, and explored ways to engage with our senior population. Executive Director Kevin Yates stated, “By investing in activities tailored to older adults, we at the park district aim not only to enrich individual lives but also to strengthen the bonds that unite our community.”
Each month, the park district hosts several events specifically designed for older adults. Coffee @ the Clubhouse, held on the second Wednesday of the month at Shore Acres Clubhouse, is a free event offering coffee, tea, and treats. It’s a wonderful opportunity for seniors to connect with others while enjoying occasional special speakers, programs, or updates on park district activities.
The park district also introduced Senior Steppers last year to promote outdoor physical activity. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, participants meet at one of the parks for a walk, lively conversation, and the chance to enjoy nature together. While this program is paused for the winter, it will resume on Wednesday, April 23rd at Coal Hollow Park.
The quarterly Getaway Trips organized by the Chillicothe Parks Foundation offer seniors the perfect chance to embark on new adventures and create lasting memories together. From cheering on the Peoria Chiefs at a thrilling baseball game to enjoying a lively Rock ‘n Roll Tribute Show at Starved Rock State Park, each outing is designed to bring joy and connection. This month, we’re excited to explore the Peoria Riverfront Museum together, promising another unforgettable experience!
The park district’s latest initiative, the Senior Cinema Series, was launched last month in partnership with Evergreen Senior Living. This program offers free movies at Shore Acres Clubhouse that highlight senior interests, challenges, and accomplishments, providing both entertainment and a sense of community.
Beyond these senior-focused events, the park district offers programs that older adults actively enjoy. From Party in the Park to Cookie and Cupcake Labs and Line Dancing Classes, seniors are an integral part of our broader activities.
“Investing in senior programming benefits everyone. Active seniors contribute to the vitality of our community, and their participation enhances the vibrancy of our public spaces. By addressing the needs of this growing demographic, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity and care for all.” stated Executive Director, Kevin Yates
Yates goes on to say, “Now is the time to act. With the senior population steadily increasing, the park district has a unique opportunity to lead the way in providing enriching and inclusive programming. Together, we can build a healthier, more connected, and thriving community for everyone. Let’s ensure our seniors feel valued, supported, and celebrated. This isn’t just an investment in their well-being—it’s an investment in the heart and soul of our community.”
