The Chillicothe Voice

From the Desk of Mayor Mike Hughes

It’s unfortunate, but today there is a lot of division in our country. Each side wants their views to be heard, and sometimes people aren’t particularly polite as they voice their opinions. Regardless of what side of a particular issue you side with, I think, or hope, we can all agree that a cemetery isn’t a place for protesting.

Cemeteries are a place for remembering our loved ones and a place for quiet reflection. Many people believe that protesting around a cemetery is disrespectful to the memories of those who are buried there and to their families. Protests need to be conducted in a manner that considers the feelings and context of the locations where they take place. Balancing the right to protest with respect for the deceased and their loved ones is a complex issue that can evoke strong opinions on both sides.
