As Peoria County marks its 200th anniversary in 2025, Chillicothe is proud to join in a countywide celebration that honors both history and heritage—with a creative twist. Dubbed the “Bison-Tennial,” the yearlong celebration is a playful yet powerful tribute to the bison, the mighty animals that once roamed the Central Illinois prairie and now serve as a symbol of strength, endurance, and bold spirit—traits Peoria County and its communities continue to embody.

One of the centerpiece attractions of the celebration is the Bison-Tennial Art Project, which features forty life-size fiberglass bison sculptures designed by local artists and community organizations. Each sculpture is uniquely decorated, reflecting the creativity, identity, and spirit of the towns, organizations, and businesses that helped shape Peoria County’s two centuries of history.

Chillicothe is among the many participating communities showcasing these striking sculptures. As part of this unique public art and tourism campaign, the City of Chillicothe purchased and installed a fiberglass bison sculpture and partnered with Owens Design Group to bring it to life with a vibrant personality that highlights our town. Chillicothe’s bison sculpture is on display at City Hall in historic downtown Chillicothe, offering a perfect photo opportunity for residents and visitors exploring the area.

This project has been a collaborative effort made possible through the support of multiple local organizations: The City of Chillicothe, Chillicothe Township, Chillicothe Park District, and Illinois Valley Central School District 321. Their partnership highlights the power of cooperative civic engagement in showcasing Chillicothe and welcoming travelers to the area.

Join the Bison Trek: Explore, Snap, and Win!
To make the celebration even more engaging, Peoria County has launched the Bison Trek Digital Passport—a free, interactive way to experience the sculptures. Participants can “trek” across the county to visit and take selfies with each bison sculpture. With each check-in, users earn digital badges and become eligible to win monthly prizes from Wildlife Prairie Park.
