Real Estate Over Coffee – The American Dream

Jul 30, 2025 10:25AM ● By Jeannie Quick – Sunflower Real Estate Group

What is the American Dream? Growing up, I always heard that owning a home was part of that dream. It was the big goal—something that meant you were on the right path in life. And while that’s still true in many ways, I’ve come to learn that homeownership is about so much more than just signing on the dotted line.

Owning a home is a powerful investment—not only financially, but emotionally and socially. It builds equity, generational stability, and long-term wealth. But it also creates neighborhood pride, economic opportunity, and even plays a role in better educational outcomes for families.

Think about that. Your home isn’t just where you live—it’s the center of your life. It’s where birthday candles are blown out, where the hard days end, and where memories quietly collect over the years.

And yet, many of us take our homes for granted. We pull in the driveway, walk through the door, and everything is just the way we left it. But behind that comfort is responsibility.

Homeownership is a big deal. As one home inspector once told a young couple, “If you take care of your home, you’ll own it. If you don’t, it’ll end up owning you.” That’s stuck with me ever since.

The roof, the plumbing, the furnace, the little fixes that come up—all of it adds up. Homes need attention and care, just like anything worthwhile in life.

One of my favorite parts of this job is handing the keys to a first-time homebuyer. I love seeing their excitement, imagining the journey ahead. Maybe it’s just two people starting out. Then along comes a baby. Then another. Okay—we’ll stop there before it turns into a sitcom!

Through the years, I’ve walked this road with all kinds of buyers and sellers. I’ve learned lessons—some the easy way, some the hard way. I’ve worked with incredible Realtors, and... well, let’s just say not all of them made the “Top 10” list. I’ve made mistakes, too—but who hasn’t? That’s life. And as someone once said:

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass—it’s about dancing in the rain.”

Before I go, here are two quick tips:

  1. If you’re looking to buy, get pre-approved. Before house hunting, talk to a lender. It will give you a clear picture of what you can afford and save you time and stress. Bonus: You’ll need that pre-approval to make an offer anyway.
  2. If you’re preparing to sell, declutter and fix what’s broken. It sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference in how your home shows—and what buyers are willing to offer.

And lastly, I want to take a moment to ask for prayers for the people in Texas—those who have lost their homes, their belongings, or even loved ones. My heart goes out to them.

Tonight, before you lay your head down, take a moment to be thankful. Whether you’re in a house you own or one you rent—if you have a roof over your head, you are blessed.

Until next month,
Enjoy your home. Take care of it. Make memories.
