Grey Ghost Classic to Bring Top Marching Bands to Chillicothe

Aug 27, 2025 04:10PM ● By the IVC Band Boosters

Chillicothe will be alive with music, pageantry, and community pride on Saturday, September 20, as the Illinois Valley Central Band Boosters host the inaugural Grey Ghost Classic marching band competition at Taylor Field on the campus of IVC High School.

The event will feature 12 marching bands from across Illinois, traveling from the Chicago suburbs to Galesburg to Danville, and many places in between. Gates open at 3pm, with performances beginning at 4pm culminating with an exhibition performance by the IVC Marching Grey Ghosts performing their 2025 show, “Let Your Light Shine Bright,” followed immediately by an awards ceremony at 8:45pm.

The Grey Ghost Classic builds on the proud legacy of the IVC Grey Ghosts Marching Band, a program recognized statewide for its musical excellence and community spirit. The event promises a day of spirited competition, delicious local food, and a warm Chillicothe welcome for thousands of visiting students, families, and spectators.

“This event is something I’ve dreamed about for a long time,” said event Coordinator Matt Briggs, “I am a proud Marching Grey Ghost Alum, and now a band dad, and the opportunity to bring in bands from across the state to celebrate our marching band history, is very exciting to be a part of.”

Current IVC Marching Band Director Matt Chapman, who will retire after this school year following a 33-year career in music education, sees the Grey Ghost Classic as a natural extension of the school’s commitment to the arts.

“IVC High School has had a long-standing tradition when it comes to the fine arts,” Chapman said. “The choirs, art department, and band department have worked hard to inspire so many students over the decades. The marching band competition is another reflection of that passion. We are excited to hopefully establish this event as one that not only inspires the arts but also helps promote the Chillicothe community. As a 33-year music educator, I am excited to bring other marching bands and their families to visit our wonderful community. We hope Chillicothe can be proud of this event, and know the countless members, past and present, of the Marching Grey Ghosts are very proud to be ambassadors for our community.”

Spectators can enjoy great performances along with food and vendors from many local businesses. The band boosters are also calling for volunteers to help run the event, from parking and admissions to hospitality and logistics.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at ivcbands.com/greyghostclassic, where visitors can also find more information about the schedule, participating bands, and volunteer opportunities.  Tickets can also be purchased day of the event at the gate.

With strong community backing, a talented field of competitors, and the deep-rooted tradition of the Marching Grey Ghosts, the Grey Ghost Classic is poised to become a signature annual event that celebrates the arts and pride of Chillicothe.
