Obituary – Robert P. Borys
Robert, 81, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025. Born on July 22, 1944, in LaSalle, Illinois, Robert lived a life marked by service, adventure, and devotion to learning.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Robert served aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) from 1963 to 1967. During his service, he completed three deployments and participated in five combat operations, including the Tet Offensive and Operation Rolling Thunder during the Vietnam War. His dedication and courage reflected his deep sense of duty to his country and his shipmates.
Following his Navy service, Robert continued his military career in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, serving from 1970 until his retirement in 1999, totaling 33 years of service to his nation.
After his military service, Robert built a life in Indiana, where he attended Ivy Tech Community College in Fort Wayne and was a member of VFW Post 857. He loved traveling the world, including visits to Mexico, Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, and Australia. His stories and mementos captured the spirit of a man always eager to learn and experience more.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Casimir and Helen Borys.
He is survived by his children, Sally Zerfass, Eric Borys and Mark Borys; his grandchildren, Mary Zerfass, Megan Zerfass, Zander Borys, and Sophie Borys; his brother, Ken Borys; and his friend and former wife, Anita Borys Emrich. Those who knew Robert will remember his curiosity, kindness, and spirit of sacrifice, as well as his unwavering pride in his service and family. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the memories he created.
A visitation was held on Monday, October 20, 2025, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Rd Fort Wayne, 46815, from 9:30 am - 10:30 am. A Funeral Mass followed at 10:30 am, at the church. Robert will be laid to rest at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, in Radcliff, Kentucky.
