Real Estate Over Coffee – The American Dream Still Lives at Home

For as long as I can remember, the American Dream meant one thing: owning a home. That belief has been passed down for generations, and there’s good reason for it.
Homeownership is more than a milestone. It is a financial investment that builds equity, long-term stability, and generational wealth. But it goes even deeper than that. Strong homeownership builds stronger neighborhoods. It encourages economic growth. It supports educational success. When families put down roots, communities thrive.
And yet, many of us take our homes for granted.
Each evening when I walk through my front door, my home is there waiting for me—just as I left it that morning. It’s dependable. It’s steady. (Though I still wish a good fairy would sneak in and wash the dishes.) I once read that if you simply make your bed each morning, you’ve already accomplished something before the day begins. There’s wisdom in that. Home provides a foundation—a place to regroup, recharge, and feel secure.
But let’s be clear: owning a home is a responsibility.
Roofs need replacing. Plumbing wears out. Electrical systems age. Windows, furnaces, siding—maintenance is ongoing. One inspector once told a young couple, “If you keep up with maintenance, you will own the home. If you don’t, the home will own you.” That advice has stayed with me for years because it’s true. A home rewards diligence and punishes neglect.
Next year, I will celebrate 20 years as a Real Estate Broker. Time has moved quickly. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping first-time buyers, growing families, and longtime homeowners ready for their next chapter. There is nothing quite like handing keys to a young couple starting out. Two people become three, sometimes four, and the memories begin.
I’ve seen successes and setbacks. Some clients follow guidance; some learn lessons the hard way. I’ve worked alongside exceptional professionals and a few who fell short. I’ve made mistakes myself. That’s life. As the saying goes, life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass—it’s about learning to dance in the rain.
If you’re considering a move, here are two straightforward pieces of advice:
First, if you’re buying, get preapproved before you start shopping. Know your numbers. Understand your monthly payment and what you can comfortably afford. A preapproval not only strengthens your offer, it also protects you from becoming financially stretched too thin.
Second, if you’re selling, declutter and repair. Fix what’s broken. Freshen up what’s outdated. Buyers notice the details. A well-maintained home stands out and commands attention.
Whether you own your home or rent, it is the place where life unfolds. It’s where holidays are celebrated, children grow, and quiet evenings bring peace. Treat it with care. Be grateful for it. Make memories within its walls.
The American Dream is still alive. It just begins at home.
