Chillicothe Circle of Service was happy to grant five scholarships to graduating seniors at IVC Honors Night Wednesday, May 13. Awarded $2,000 general education scholarships to Hatley Burdette and Hannah Lipke. Recipient of the $1,000 trade school scholarship is Jacob Cathey. Faith Longstreth was given the $2,000 Nancy Wilson Memorial Scholarship by Nancy’s children Ric Wilson and Rhonda Renner, and Miley Stamate received the $1,500 Peggy Pierson Memorial Scholarship presented by Peggy’s son Brian Fislar. Recipients were chosen based on financial need, a GPA of 2.5 or above (2.0 for trade school scholarship), ACT/SAT scores, school activity participation, commitment to community service, and work experience.
Brian Fislar, author of Whispers in a Ghost Town, was the guest speaker at our May meeting. He is a native Chillicothean, graduating from IVC in 1983, who now lives in Texas. His research on Shore Acres Park led him to write Whispers. He’s also written The Night the Name Was Spoken, a short fictional story about the creation of the Grey Ghosts identity. Two other books are planned—one about the Ghosts’ 1957 football team titled Autumn on the Edge scheduled to be released in August and the second telling the story of Billy Galindo, a local hometown hero, which will be available in Fall 2027.
Personal care items for Community Needs Agency (CNA) were donated by members and delivered to CNA by Service Committee members Mary Baker and Beth Colgan. A wide variety of things were included — razors for men and women, shaving cream, deodorant, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes, Kleenex and lots of other personal articles which people need on a daily basis. Darlene Kumpf, President of CNA, thanked our members for their generosity.
Officers for 2026 – 2028 were installed at the May meeting. They are President Carol Solis; 1st Vice President Elaine Snyder; 2nd Vice President Char Williamson; Recording Secretary Linda Krider; Corresponding Secretary Diane Koch; Treasurer Laurie March; and Board Members Kay Bartley, Jane Funk and Janet Gilomen. Thanks to all for their dedication to Circle of Service.
