Webster’s dictionary defines the word extraordinary as going beyond what is usual, regular, or customary. While Nancy Gould may not immediately spring to mind when considering those who lived extraordinary lives, she unquestionably deserves a place among them. Nancy was not just any ordinary wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother. She was that person you knew you could count on when you needed help.

More than a year has passed since we bid farewell to Nancy Gould, a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to love, hard work, and unwavering dedication to her family and our community.

Nancy Ann Herges was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois to Alcuin and Lorraine Herges. She attended Champaign High School and was involved in many activities. After graduation she attended Eureka College where she would meet the love of her life. Dennis Gould was a student athlete at Eureka when the pair met. They would soon get married on June 20, 1959, and go on to raise five children—Lorelei, Tony, Angie, Christopher, and Richard. After they were married, they lived in Champaign as Denny continued his education and his college football career at the University of Illinois. Anyone that knew this couple, understood their marriage of 63 years had a foundation based on faith, family, and love.

Nancy’s love extended to her family, including her 11 grandchildren—Cameron, Delaney, Grace, Noah, Gentry, Olivia, Elise, Matthew, Collin, Griffin, and Christopher. Her presence in their lives was a testament to her nurturing spirit and unwavering support. She proudly had pictures of all her grandchildren on display inside her house and loved to show them off. Family was her life. Additionally, she had one great-grandchild, Reagan, further exemplifying her deep-rooted love and connection within her cherished family.

For over 40 years, Nancy dedicated herself to working for the City of Chillicothe. Many residents have fond memories of stopping in City Hall to pay their water bill and engaging in conversation with Nancy. She also worked behind the scenes and contributed her skills to many other causes. She wasn’t one to seek the spotlight but was known for her hard work, reliability, and commitment to her responsibilities.

A cherished member of St. Edward Catholic Church, she devoted herself tirelessly to various roles within the community. Her contributions were diverse: from imparting musical education at St. Edward School to actively engaging with the Mother’s Club, sponsoring the spirited St. Edward cheerleading team—whose memorable performance during a marathon Bradley University seven-overtime game in 1981 remains etched in memory. Moreover, she wielded her musical prowess as the choir director for numerous years. Her impact surpassed boundaries, touching countless lives in so many ways. For students at St. Edward, she might have been the kind soul serving lunch or the inspiring music instructor. Year after year, she meticulously crafted enchanting Christmas pageants, hand-sewing intricate costumes for the wise men, angels, shepherds, Mary, and Joseph. For girls attending St. Edward in the late seventies and early eighties, she likely handcrafted their cheerleading uniforms. Even long after her own children had graduated, she continued supporting the squads at games, hauling a record player for their halftime performances—a testament to her unwavering dedication and selflessness.

However, what many will fondly recall are the cherished moments spent in Nancy’s kitchen. Her recipes, featured in the “Cooking with Nancy” column in the Chillicothe Independent, were more than just about food—they were stories that brought people together, creating cherished memories around the dinner table.

Attempting to encapsulate Nancy’s extraordinary life in mere words feels like painting a masterpiece on a postage stamp. She gave so much to others, leaving an indelible impact on her community and the lives she touched.

An exceptional life isn’t measured by riches or fame, but by the lasting impressions left on the hearts of others. Nancy Gould lived a life embodying hard work, love, and a steadfast commitment to those around her.

Even now, over a year after her passing, Nancy’s memory remains cherished. Her legacy lives on as a reminder of the importance of kindness, dedication, and the power of a caring heart.

As we reflect on Nancy Gould’s life, we realize that words alone can’t capture the full depth of her character. Her spirit lives on, a guiding light in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.

Nancy, your absence is deeply felt, and your memory will forever remain in our hearts. You are greatly missed and will always be remembered.
